Swine Flue and the Nutritional Approach
Given that the World Health Organisation has said that we have not yet seen the worst of the H1N1 Influenza virus, I thought it might be helpful for me to put some information on our website about strategies that you may be able to use to help protect you against the H1N1 virus or to help reduce the severity of the symptoms.
The body has amazing natural anti-viral defences given half a chance and there are plenty of evidence-based nutritional strategies to help optimise this defence system
In the initial stage of exposure to a virus, antibodies will bind to a virus in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract. They work to remove the virus and also to provide identification to other parts of the immune system so that they can destroy the virus. This rapid initial defence is also reliant on the presence of mucins, a type of protein that can bind to virus’ to enable its removal and also offer dummy binding sites (sialic acid ligands), to stop the virus binding to surface cells which would enable replication. Particular types of probiotic bacteria i.e. beneficial gut bacteria may be able to increase the mucins in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts.
Mucosal Immune Support’, Could This Help?
Many people with good strong immune systems are very likely to get better without the use of anti-virals or nutritional supplements, however those with a more compromise immune system may benefit from additional help in the form of probiotics, probiotic yeasts and milk concentrates such as colostrums/laktoferrin or food supplements.
Present evidence suggestes that most people will experience mild symptoms and make a full recovery.
Once you have flu, then anti-virals will only usually shorten the duration of the condition for a couple of days.
Hygiene suggestions
It seems that carrying out a single approach is unlikely to work, but that a combination of factors could make a difference.
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand cleaner when soap and water are not available.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
- People who are sick with an influenza-like illness (ILI) (fever plus at least cough or sore throat and possibly other symptoms like runny nose, body aches, headaches, chills, fatigue, vomiting and diarrhoea) should stay home and minimise contact with others, including avoiding travel, for 7 days after their symptoms begin or until they have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer.
- Avoid close contact (i.e. being within about 6 feet) with persons with ILI.
Pregnancy – What to do:
To consult both your GP and a Nutritional Therapist to help promote good health.
Nutrients that Can Help to Protect Your First Line of Defence
The nutrients below are worth investigation:-
- Colostrum – Rich in natural immune agents including Immunoglobulins IgG, IgA and IgM, nucleotides, gamma-interferon, orotic acid, enzymes and Vitamin E, E and B12.
Laktoferrin – Obtained from bovine colostrums and possessing iron binding properties. It appears to have a positive effect on lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) and good bacteria in the gut (i.e. four first line of defence)
Saccharomyces Boulardii – A probiotic-non-colonising yeast species closely related to Brewer’s Yeast and not related to the yeast group to which candida belongs. Take orally produces lactic acid, some B-vitamins and can help to promote friendly bacteria (acidophilus and bifidobacteria) colonisation in the gut which in turn can help to elevated the secretory IgA levels (i.e. the first line of defence)
Culturelle GG - This is an extensively studies strain of friendly intestinal bacteria and contains up to 30 billion viable organisms per capsule at time of production and is guaranteed to have at least 10 billion at sell by date.
Homeopathic Remedies can also be extremely helpful for helping to control high temperatures so consider contacting a homeopath or homeopathic chemist such as www.nelsonsnaturalworld.com or call Nelsons Homeopathic Pharmacy 020 7629 3118
If you are pregnant or taking any medications please first either consult your GP or a Nutritional Therapist to check whether they are any contraindications with taking any type of supplement.
